Review: Fashion 21 Double Up Mascara

Hello lovely readers! First of all, I want to thank you for supporting and reading my posts! :))

Today, I am going to review the Fashion 21 Double Up Mascara. I heard about this product from Teena of AngKikayKo, I think this is her favorite Philippine drugstore mascara. I bought this a couple of months ago for 225.
Product Description: Get 2x the length and volume in an instant! Comes with a unique glide-soft bristle for easy application with zero clumps.

In my opinion, this is more of a lengthening mascara rather than a volumizing one. I do agree though that this mascara does not clump, and it may be because of its wand.
The mascara wand has short but soft bristles. It's very effective in combing and separating the lashes, which is a good factor when it comes to mascara brushes.

Product claims:
  • Smudge Proof
  • Water Proof
  • Lengthens eyelashes 2-times
  • Volumizes eyelashes by combining 2-3 strands to make it look thicker
I asked the SA in the Fashion 21 counter if this is waterproof, and she said yes. But no, this mascara is not waterproof and definitely not smudge-proof.

Directions for use:
1. Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler, if desired, before using a mascara.
2. Apply mascara starting at the base of upper eyelashes.
3. Draw the wand gently outward to the tips.
4. Hold the mascara wand vertically to color your lower lashes.

Let's see how the product works on my lashes:
No Mascara
One Coat
Two Coats
No Mascara
One Coat
Two Coats

With just one coat, you can immediately see how it lengthened my lashes. Two coats and my lashes has more volume, without being clumpy or looking spidery. It also does a great job in coating the lower lashes, but I didn't follow the instruction (holding the wand vertically) because when I tried it for the first time, I made a big mess on my under eye area.

What I like about this product:
- Very good packaging (love the color red! And it's sturdy and slim too.)
- Affordable at 225 and widely available
- Doesn't clump
- Gives length and volume to the lashes
- Wand separates the lashes perfectly
- It does not flake

What I didn't like about this product:
- Formula is quite thick and damp
- It weighs down the lashes and will not hold your curl
- Takes time to dry (First time I used this, I blinked and the mascara transferred in my under eye area)
- Application can be messy if you are not careful
- Not waterproof and smudge-proof
- Hard to remove (you can use an oil-based makeup remover, or in my case, I use baby oil!)
My lashes are quite thin and they grow straight down, so I wanted a mascara that will not weigh it down and will hold my curl. Unfortunately this mascara doesn't hold the curl of my lashes and is quite heavy. Used alone, it failed me. Since I don't want this to go to waste, I use it hand-in-hand with my Maybelline The Magnum Volum' Express Waterproof mascara.

I curl my lashes first, apply 2 coats of waterproof volumizing mascara, 1 coat of this to lengthen my lashes, then top it off with my waterproof mascara again. Once everything is dry, I curl my lashes again (making sure that my lashes are completely dry and my eyelash curler is clean). You may think it is quite a lot, but this works for me and it achieves the effect that I want.

If you don't have thin, sparse and straight lashes, and if you don't sweat a lot in the under eye area, this may work for you. Also, it's about your personal preference. Just because it didn't work for me means it might not perform well on you.

I am working on something that will really capture the essence and concept of this blog: building your own makeup kit that costs 500 or less. I am still researching products, and hopefully I can upload it soon. I appreciate your patience.

Again, thank you so much for your support! Until my next post.
